Pediatricians receive special training in the health and illnesses of infants, children, teens, and young adults. We provide preventive health care for children in good health, medical care for children with chronic conditions such as ADHD or asthma, newborn care, developmental screenings, and much more. We also provide parents with support and advice with issues such as growth and development, safety and prevention, nutrition, and emotional wellness to foster a lifetime of good health.

Well-Child Exams

Well-child exams are a vital part of a child’s health care. These visits allow us to examine the child for overall health, growth, and development. We also discuss nutrition, sleep habits, and age-appropriate topics such as potty training, dental care, and safety issues. Regular wellness visits allow us to detect and address health problems before they become serious, or in some cases prevent them entirely!

Immunizations

Many of the well-child visits in the first years of life include immunizations—these help to protect your child from some harmful and potentially life-threatening diseases.

ABC Pediatrics believes that all children should receive the recommended vaccines according to the guidelines provided by the AAP and the CDC. Vaccines are safe and effective in preventing diseases and health complications in children and young adults. Regular vaccinations help children ward off infections, and are administered as one of the safest and best methods of disease prevention.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Approximately 9.5 percent of American children are afflicted with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While all children may at some point have trouble sitting still or paying attention, those with ADHD have a chemical imbalance within the brain that presents as a persistent and debilitating pattern of behavior. These behaviors can include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The diagnosis is made based on the child’s age and developmental level and his or her symptoms. The symptoms must be present in a variety of settings, and must interfere with daily life.

Those with inattentive ADHD are often easily distracted, forgetful and tend to ignore those who are speaking directly to them. They typically do not follow instructions, cannot stay organized and misplace items easily. This is the subtype that still occasionally receives the “ADD” label. Hyperactive or impulsive children are excessively “busy” – they talk constantly, squirm or get up from their seats, interrupt others and cannot focus on quiet play or activities such as silent reading. Some children display symptoms of all three subtypes.

While some children with ADHD respond well to medication, it is not considered a “cure” for the condition. When it is used in tandem with a healthy diet and clear and consistent bedtime and exercise routines, it seems to be more effective. Monitoring your child’s ADHD treatment closely with your pediatrician will help determine the best course of action.

Childhood Allergies

Children are notorious for picking up germs and becoming sick frequently. However, where is the line between a simple cold or flu and something more? Allergies, which can produce similar symptoms as a cold or the flu, affect about 40% of children, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

What are allergies?

An allergic reaction is your immune system’s response to an allergen or particular substance. The immune system mistakenly believes that the allergen is harmful and begins fighting against it, causing the reaction to occur. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe and have a variety of treatments. Before diagnosing an allergy, doctors usually order an allergy test to find out what exact substances an individual has an allergic reaction to.

Does my child have allergies?

Allergens cause symptoms in two main categories: allergic reactions from food and allergic reactions from other elements. You may notice different symptoms for these two types of reactions.

Symptoms of allergic reactions from food include:

Swelling of the face/tongue
Vomiting
Stomach irritation
Mouth itchiness
Shortness of breath

Symptoms of an allergy produced from other elements like dust, pollen or animal dander may include:

Itchy eyes
Wheezing
Itchy skin
Hives
Cough
Stuffy or runny nose
Shortness of breath
Sneezing
Watery eyes

How do pediatricians test for allergies?

Your child’s doctor will use an allergy test to determine the exact substances your child’s immune system reacts to. Allergy tests usually come in the form of a prick or scratch test, but doctors may also order a blood test. Prick or scratch tests involve placing tiny amounts of different substances onto the skin, then pricking or scratching the skin to allow the substance to enter the body. If the skin around the substance reacts, your child is allergic. If the skin remains normal, there is no allergy to that substance.

Allergy Treatments

The best way to prevent allergies is to avoid the allergen itself. However, since this is not always an option, doctors treat many cases of seasonal or animal allergies with antihistamine medications. These medications block the body’s reaction to the allergen to decrease symptoms. Decongestants and steroid sprays also help manage symptoms. Immunotherapy exposes the patient to symptoms to build the body’s immunity to them. Some very severe allergies result in anaphylactic shock, which could be life threatening. These situations often require the help of an emergency adrenaline injection like an Epic Pen.

Asthma Management

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that as many as 6.8 million children have asthma, which is close to 10 percent of all kids. The symptoms range from mild to severe, requiring close monitoring at all times. If your child has been diagnosed with asthma or has symptoms of this health condition, make it a priority to learn as much as possible about managing it successfully. What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that causes difficulty in breathing. The lungs spasm and become inflamed, causing the child to wheeze, trying to catch his breath. Doctors believe that asthma is caused by allergies or hypersensitivity to environmental conditions that make the lungs swell and tighten. An attack may be brought on by other factors, like stress or fear. When children suffer from this condition it is particularly concerning because they are more likely to participate in high-energy activities like sports and games with peers. Symptoms of an asthma attack include:

Shortness of breath
Tightness in the chest
Wheezing and gasping for air
Coughing at night

What Causes Asthma in Children?

The exact cause of childhood asthma is still somewhat of a mystery to doctors and experts, but many believe it is a hereditary condition passed down through families. Your pediatrician finds that children who suffer from asthma are usually very sensitive to irritants and certain substances in the air. Sometimes even certain types of food, like shellfish, can trigger asthma symptoms. It’s important for children who are managing asthma symptoms to get an allergy test so that they know which irritants to avoid.

Asthma Treatments

Of course, the most pressing question on the minds of parents who have children with asthma is how to treat it successfully so that it doesn’t disrupt their lives. Your pediatrician’s office prescribes asthma medication (inhalers) for fast relief and may also prescribe long-term therapies (like Sublingual Immunotherapy, which may help boost a person’s resistance to allergens) aimed at reducing the instances of asthma attacks over time.
